This feels like one I should like more, but I'm not sure if I necessarily gelled with the pacing or the direction the story went, but that may be a matter of expectations that a rewatch could improve. Though the orientalism certainly doesn't help. With all that being said, William Wyler directs the hell out of this and Bette Davis is just spectacular as always.

Just an additional fun fact, my great grandfather worked at a rubber plantation in Sumatra in the late 30s, so that's just a fun little connection.

My favorite film from the Warner Archive Bette Davis Collection (so far). Very strong opening and a very strong end. The pacing could of been stronger at some points but nothing too bad, particularly after the truth is revealed I felt it lagged till the ending. Herbert Marshall was also so great his preformance was so heartbreaking.

The loghting and the blocking were amazing, but this movie is just flat-out boring nothing is really shocking about this and the asian stereotypes are not aging well in current times. Bette Davis was pretty good the story did not deserve the actors it had.
