Perhaps the most overlooked film in Malle’s filmography, Milou en mai is a mischievous satire set to the background of the 1968 riots in a country estate in Southern France.
The Vieuzac family gather for the matriarch’s funeral, who founds herself laid out at the house without a proper burial due to the strikes and, while the situation gets figured out, things get complicated and (sexual) financial tension builds between them.
It’s refreshing to see an account of the events [of May 68] through a wistful comedy, subtle in social criticism but poignant in its depiction of the bourgeoisie hypocrisy. I think it stands among Malle’s very best and is ripe for a re-evaluation.
