Somehow simultaneously cartoonishly ridiculous and very violent and bleak, every single character in this is a one dimensional caricature to a degree that this should probably not work at all. It’s just that the complete lack of depth to literally any character sort of ends up horseshoing around to working because of how insane the world the characters live in is. I could be fooled into believing the titular Mister Golgo 13 is a parody of the Peak Masculinity Ryan Gosling Drive meme 40 years in advance. Rival assassins with gimmicks, some of which is don’t really understand. Don’t even get me started on how women are portrayed in this. 

And it’s so awesome. A terrific looking movie. It’s gonna suck when I watch the live action Sonny Chiba movies and the one other animated movie and they all suck. Such is life

This movie got me high. I can't believe I was softly uninterested in this movie. When I tell you this anime does the MOST, I mean it. This movie has a James Bond intro credits scene and it's better than any James Bond intro credits scene. Golgo 13 is one of the coolest characters in all of movies, much less all of anime.

The breadth of stylistic choices drives the movie forth with artistic momentum that feels fresh, interesting, and ceaselessly engaging. Every story beat hits like the bullet from Duke's gun. Total punch to the face, you will not forget this. There is a moment in the latter half of the movie where they bust out cg. This is 1983. The animation is so out of place, and now, so out of time, that the intentionality of this choice is emphasized even more. In a way, this feels like a brief moment of technological archeology.

The title character, whose real name, Duke Togo (has there ever been a cooler name?) is the GOAT. Anime has always been the best at creating cool and unstoppable characters, but wow, Duke Togo is on another level. If your name is on his bullet... Omae Wa Mou Shindeiru.
