I had to bump my rating for this film down because I’m sick and fucking tired of the misogyny in Stuart Gordon’s films. Re-Animator is one of my favorite films of all time; I adore it, but never will I ever defend a certain scene near the end. The misogyny is even more prominent in this film. Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton were phenomenal in this. There is a genuinely solid gothic tragedy that lingers in the bowels of this film, one that bred some truly excellent scenes. Unlike a lot of other reviews that I’ve read, I like the darker tone of this film. I like how dreary it is.
What I don’t like is the graphic sexual assault scenes that didn’t need to be there. It’s so unnecessary and takes away from what was otherwise a really solid and interesting film. I loved the atmosphere, I loved the setting, I loved the eurohorror feel of it, but all of that goes out the window because of a couple bad scenes. It left such a sour taste in my mouth. This film would have been at least 4 stars for me if it didn’t have that shit. I’m not going to give it any lower than 3 because I think that the high points of this film are very high but, in the same breath, I can’t give it anything higher than a 3. Could have gone without the cat murder too.
