Not as good as return of Godzilla but a worthy sequel to it. I think Biollante was a little under utilized here but the intricacies with the puppet and just how cool it looked made sure that when she was in screen she was making a statement. Godzilla is still properly scary in this one still the villain and still the main cause of conflict in the movie. The main plot gets a little muddled in the beginning but eventually finds a way to smooth things out once all of the plot points intersect. I think we’re supposed to feel more empathy for the dr character whose daughter was killed but to me he just seemed really stupid. Like the loss of anyone sucks and loss of a child is even worse but to mix her DNA, with a plant’s DNA, and throw in Godzilla DNA seems rather… stupid to me and that’s a lot coming from what I have seen in this series so far. I think the idea of devolving a nuclear waste eating bacteria is cool though from my memory of the next movies that’s something that’s never really touched on again.
Nice little fact about me this is the final Godzilla film that I had not seen prior to this little binge so it’s kind of a big moment for me to say that I have now seen every single Godzilla movie that’s out there.
Biollante feels like a good follow up to returns but lacks that special sauce that some of the best Godzilla movies have. I will say as a small complaint in regards to subtitling, I appreciate these films in their original Japanese release do not dub over anyone else who speaks a different language they just subtitle them in Japanese. The problem is you have subtitles for people speaking Japanese, in the case of returns subtitles for people speaking Russian along with closed captions in English overlayed on the embedded Japanese subtitles, and also in the case of returns Japanese embedded subtitles along with closed captioning for the native English speakers the problem is if anyone is speaking English all you get are the embedded Japanese subtitles but no closed captioning and that would be fine except some of these actors speak with a very thick accent depending on where they’re from Japan or a middle eastern country. For me who is normally hearing Japanese and reading English to all of the sudden hear English see Japanese subtitles but no closed captioning it throws me off and I miss everything they’ve said. I’m sure this is just a me problem but if I have captions on, just subtitle everyone for my puny orc brain.
