Days of being wild is a stunning film about commitment issues and chasing love. The movie follows a guy that seduces multiple women and makes them fall in love with him, just for him to loose interest and treat them badly. The movie also follows these women and how they handle rejection. Days of being wild portrays isolation in society, longing and toxic love beautifully. The shots are colorfully, vivid and full of life; but the characters in them are not. This creates a contrast which makes us feel their emotions deeply. This was however my least favorite installment in Wong Kar-wai’s love trilogy, but still a great movie.

I really loved Wong Kar-wai’s take on loneliness in this film and the way his characters try to fill emotional voids through intimacy and connection. The acting especially stood out to me because of how much meaning was carried in the silences and pauses before certain lines. Normally long pauses in dialogue would bother me, but here they felt so intentional and emotional. The moment before Zeb says “come back to me” genuinely got to me because you can almost see the anxious trembling underneath the silence.

I also found it heartbreaking how both Su and Mimi continue longing for Yuddy’s affection even after the way he mistreats them. In a way, both women already found the people who could truly love them, but they were too consumed by Yuddy to fully see it. The scenes between Su Li-zhen and the police officer were so tender and sweet, which made the ending hurt even more. The fact that she finally called him only for him to no longer be there absolutely broke me!!!! They are endgame to me forever.

A fascinating start to a trilogy I’ve now completely watched out of order.
