Father slaves away at laborious job to provide a promising future for his prodigy son. But while away at work, his son bonds with a lazy, apathetic music teacher and a woman in an extramarital affair. Which causes tension to grow within the father-son relationship as well as the other relationships.
The editing and narrative grew on me as the film started to end. Both the editing and story of the film feel closed-off and makes confusing choices to propel the story. Cinematography implements the "magic hour" or "golden hour" (I could be wrong) when filming outside Beijing which is simply awe-inspiring. Humanistic performances throughout the film, everyone starts to become their own unique individual as the running time goes on.
Almost becomes extremely sentimental, to the point of melodrama (like it's just a violin, not a human being). This obfuscates the craft of the film and the various themes running throughout the film. When I gravitated more to the theme(s) of the film, it rang more true and personal.
Found a DVD copy at Goodwill, they sell most of their movies on Amazon. Lucky me, I guess.
