Dan Aykroyd's character canonically has a huge dick in this movie.Since I started exploring Dan Aykroyd's filmography, this movie has been on my radar for all the wrong reasons. I've only heard awful things about this movie, so my expectations going into this were in hell. With that in mind, I was completely shocked to see that I actually enjoyed this movie. It's a mess, but it's far from the worst movie ever made. It's actually quite humorous.
I haven't read the original Anne Rice book, and now I really want to compare them. There is absolutely no way that it's this wacky and comedic.
I was shocked by how much I was laughing during this movie. This wasn't a pity laugh, but actual hysterical laughter at certain points. There is great comedic timing present in this movie, particularly with the duel dynamics between Dan Aykroyd and Rosie O'Donnell. They should have done more movies together, because their chemistry was very fun to watch. Aykroyd plays up his awkwardness to an appealing extreme, and Rosie O'Donnell is genuinely fun to watch in this; fuck you, I said it. I wish I cared more for the antagonists, as I didn't find them too appealing.
The dynamic between Elliot and Lisa has sprinklings of neat ideas. Despite how uncomfortable (and not in a good way) the opening scene is, there are fun psychological complexities to them, and other characters on the island. The flashback sequences were nice additions and added a level of depth I wasn't expecting.
My biggest complaints with this movie are that there are significant chunks of the movie that lose my interest since nothing much is happening, but they are occasionally spruced up by pretty titillating moments. I also felt that, while the comedic elements are great, they could have been balanced better with the other characters' traumatic pasts.
If you can find a copy of this, since it appears they are trying to burn every copy of this movie, I would totally watch it. It's a mess, but it has a weirdly sharp comedic edge that makes it worth seeking out.
