Lady in the lake is an adaptation to the Raymond Chandler novel with the PI Phillip Marlowe with a pretty fun and interesting gimmick of being a full pov movie.
The gimmick here is the best part but goes on a little long. Following Marlowe as a pov character is cool. He is a bit more of a dick than the original novel though do some scenes make you think ok. The wraparound where he breaks the 4rth wall is interesting too where he enlists your help to solve the mystery. It's nice but the con here is if it was a whodunit it would have worked more than a noir movie.
The movie feels very noir. Marlowe is a classic detective and has done fun lines and moments. The best character for me is Audrey totters. She was sexy, cool and the most personality for Me.
The direction is well done by Robert Montgomery who also stars as Marlowe. As a 40s movie it's must have been strange to film in a pov way and I'm curious to see how it was received.
The lady in the lake isn't a perfect adaptation by its mostly saved by its gimmick and Audrey totter.
