I am genuinely so baffled that people don't like this but then rate Obsession 5/5 stars.
It's the second time I watch this film and I'm still a fan. Not a big fan, but a fan nonetheless.
I mean, we have a Doors loving demon, what's not to like there?
Exorcism stories rarely do it for me; however, we should all acknowledge that “Deliver us from evil” gave us a pretty cool one.
The whole film sets the atmosphere with some eerie shots and sounds that I kinda think are Derrickson's signature at this point; Eric Bana delivered - pun intended - quite the performance, the perfect face to portray a man eaten alive by guilt and ire.
Sure, if you don't like crime films you definitely won't like this one: I would say it's still a supernatural horror, but first and foremost a thriller/crime; I understand that it's a bit slow and for a horror lover this can feel underwhelming, but everything revolves around a crime investigation, I feel it's only natural that it develops slowly.
I personally appreciated the way the film took its sweet time to unfold the story, while also letting us understand the main characters better along the way.
It's a slow burn that ends in a fucking blaze.
