While watching The Naked Prey, there wasn’t much that I didn’t love. It was tense, well paced, and surprisingly meditative despite its vicious nature. It asks a lot from the viewer when it comes to their suspension of disbelief, but I think the movie is self-aware and doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s your typical “man survives in the wilderness against all odds” movie, and it works for what it is. I love when movies can lack dialogue but make up for it in other ways, and this is a prime example. I should watch more movies on a whim because I found out about this movie just yesterday, and I really enjoyed it.

A very visually stunning film, very immersive in that respect. I think I need a glass of ice water after this, because I really felt the heat (tbf it is also summer rn).

A rather complicated presentation of the African peoples. In some ways I can see how they were trying to be respectful (compared to some films from a similar era), but at the end of the day it's kinda still a bit ermmm for several reasons.

The little girl was so sweet I actually teared up I can't lie.

It was nice to hear though that Wilde on set tried to be as careful as possible when it comes to keeping the animals safe. I believe all footage of animal death was archival, and the only animal to be killed on set was a snake. The story goes that the snake and the lizard were fighting, Wilde could see one was winning so he stepped in to save the lizard and got bitten by the snake. The crew they killed the snake to help Wilde (who had to be flown to hospital), but the snake was't really killed FOR the film. Low standards, but you never can tell with films of this era. They were pretty brutal.

Things I liked: this is a beautiful movie - the landscapes are stunning. I also love a movie where you don’t need to understand any of the words to comprehend not just the plot, but even the spoken word’s meaning.

Questions I had: man, why are we so shit at fake blood? Like, these men look like the got stabbed with a spear full of Firetruck Red Sherwin Williams on clearance…
