Deliciously absurd and wonderfully poignant. This grotesque Polish satire is such a terrific exploration of media control and how the media can spin pretty much any narrative they want, to appease the general public and help them fall into their tragic ideology. Set in wintery Poland right after the Martian invasion of the Earth and their welcoming takeover of the ruling media; this film follows the famous ‘independent’ Tv presenter Iron Idem and his struggle for the truth in a bizarre world (Polish city) full of lies and deception. A world that seems impossible to overcome, everyone is sucked into this dystopian reality and there is no way out. The cold background of Poland is brilliantly captured with harsh, hazy lighting and a strangely futuristic atmosphere that is, weirdly, visually stunning, the compositions and camera work is very striking and really manages to create such a unique looking piece of Eastern European cinema. I loved the feeling of unease and aloofness that flooded the whole film, everything and everyone felt so artificial and only Idem (even with his slightly distant appearance) felt ‘normal’. I intensely enjoyed this film, a great mashup of a political satire and an all-round absurdist masterpiece, fabulous stuff!
