Hey so this was adorable. I don’t know why I liked this as much as I did I figured this would be a slog, a childish, goodfy, dumbed down Godzilla movie and while it is, I think if your a parent and a parent specifically of boys like I am, you will have this weird connection to Godzilla you’ve never thought you’d have before. Godzilla in this movie without any lines of dialogue, is such a clear and motivated character in this. He’s a father and is here to protect and teach his son. Godzilla’s son is, kind of ugly, but in a cute way he reminds me of the mogwai from gremlins, kind of cutely ugly. The monsters in this movie are fairly underwhelming and I mean that in a positive light. Like they’re underwhelming because Godzilla’s child shouldn’t be fighting Rodan, mothra, or ghidorah. He fighting big praying mantis’ and a giant spider and that’s fine because with them being fairly weak in comparison to the others mentioned it gives Godzilla a chance to show his son how it’s done. The scenes of them bonding are very sweet. Godzilla just trying to take a nap and little Godzilla playing jump rope with his tail is so relatable to just trying to take a breather and your kid wanting to just go go go.
The humans are doing an admirable thing in this at least, they’re trying to control the weather in concentrated areas to produce more fertile soil to grow more food for the growing population. That’s really it, they’re on an island, that island happens to have giant praying mantas’ a giant spider, Godzilla’s son and eventually Godzilla.
The ending to this movie is weirdly somber and sad for a Godzilla movie this far into the series. Like yeah I’d saw the ending of the very first Godzilla movie has a pretty dower but quietly hopeful ending but this one is like shockingly depressing. They thankfully mention that they won’t die they’ll just hibernate until they unfreeze and melt but even still, Godzilla’s son trying his best to keep up with his dad but the cold and the snow eventually getting him to the point that he can no longer move, and Godzilla having the decency to turn around and embrace his son as they both freeze into hibernation is so oddly sweet. Apparently the original ending was Godzilla just leaving his kid to freeze but I’m very glad they changed it to have them holding one another to the bitter end. Is it corny? Yeah but we’re how many Godzilla movies into this series now? I’ll take corny if it has heart to it and yeah I think this is a solid movie. Also cool for future Godzilla movies that this island is set up here in this movie to be monster island.
Either way weirdly solid Godzilla movie, I think if your a parent you’ll weirdly get more out of this than a teenager who wants to watch Godzilla wreck stuff would.
