[This is a review I wrote for this back in 2023 while I was doing a big One Piece rewatch coinciding with my short film. Relogging it here as I decide it's time to get back into One Piece and finally try to finish Wano.]
"Also using this to talk about the Dream 9 Toriko & One Piece & Dragon Ball Z Super Collaboration Special A.K.A. The World's Strongest Collaboration A.K.A One Piece Episode 590.
Which in reality is kinda just underwhelming. I find it funny to remember how much Shonen Jump and Toei tried to push Toriko as this next huge franchise but in this, those characters feel like the little brother that One Piece had to bring to the party because their mom told them they couldn't go unless they did. For a Gen-Z reference, Shonen Jump is doing the same thing right now with Kagurabachi, A.K.A. that sword guy you keep seeing memes about on Twitter.
The whole special has very heavy fan film vibes with the characters doing a greatest hits of all their iconic moves and yet with a 45 minute run time it still feels paced like a Tik Tok. I would've loved to just see Goku and Luffy vibing and being silly little guys for 20-30 minutes, maybe with some action, but what we ended up getting was very forgettable, much like Toriko was in general."
