Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - The Laughing Man
I didn’t know this was on Letterboxd! I’m using this to review season 1 of SAC as a whole, not just the laughing man storyline. I really loved it! There was some “Meh” episodes but the good ones really made up for it. The last 2 especially are masterpieces. Really throughly enjoyed

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - The Laughing Man
Film: "You know what they call a copy without an original, right?"
Me: "oh yeah, Baudrillard coined the term simulacr-"
Film: "Stand Alone Complex"
Me: "...oh"

I was worried about watching this as I had been watching the series and I was afraid of missing everything that had been cut, but then I remembered the excessive restating of plot and filler and realized I'd be fine. The movie version is still aggressively hard to follow, especially because we are tasked with following multiple off-screen characters and their actions (and history). Still, the passionate plot against corporate conspiracy was admirable, and I very much enjoyed it. The action plays very nice against the political drama.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - The Laughing Man
Using this to rate the first season of Stand Alone Complex as it's not on here, but I do plan on watching the movie and will make a subsequent review.

The show was pretty good. It expands on all of the characters and the overrarching narrative was really interesting. If you liked the 1995 movie, then you will most likely enjoy this. My only complaint is that while the season is decently split into main narrative episodes and stand-alone episodes, there's a hefty chunk of episodes that were all stand-alone in a row. As someone who enjoyed the Laughing Man arc, it got a little tedious getting 3-4 episodes straight without going back to it.

I'm pretty excited to watch the OVA, I really wonder if any new scenes will get added or if it's merely a compilation of scenes from the show. I'm also worried about what will be removed as there are 12 main narrative episodes which totals to about 5 hours, but the movie itself is nearly 3 so there are bound to be some immense cutting.
