This movie is much like the lifestyle of Versailles; lavish and empty. If Sofía Coppola was attempting to portray that, she succeeded, however by the hour thirty mark I was just waiting for it to end. It felt like much of the dialogue was absolutely meaningless snippets you’d overhear at a party. Many storylines I was trying to grasp onto went nowhere or abruptly ended. She could have dug deeper into them not consummating their marriage, her love interest, or their baby dying but it seemed like the movie kept getting distracted by the cool parties. All this would have been fine if I cared about the characters or the plot, but I just didn’t.
That being said, the costume design was gorgeous. Everything she put on screen was gorgeous. I was particularly impressed by the cinematography. The punk soundtrack was cool, i didn’t mind it but I felt like they could have leaned more into the campy aspect than halfway do a legit period piece.
