i had such a good time with this movie. i've been wanting to watch this for ages and i genuienly couldn't find it anywhere, it wasn't on internet archives, it wasn't on dvd or blu ray and it wasn't on any website i knew so i kinda gave up on it till i finally found a website i could watch this on and im so glad i watched this. theres so many great years for cinema whether it be 2001, 1985, 1994 but in my honest opinion it just has to go to 1957, this year of cinema will never ever be beaten like theres the likes of seventh seal, wild strawberries, even tokyo twilight and now this colourful, vibrant masterful tale of independence and the search for happiness in a post war environment. this movie is very ahead of its time aswell, the female protagonist who is kinda challenging the social norm at the time is a very different type of movie compared to many japanese movies from around the 50's because they featured a lot of sexist themes and ideas whilst this is a movie that explores feminine independence and i loved every single minute of it. the vibrant atmosphere and the overall soft tone is soothing and it's melodramatic scenes especially in the latter half are just fantastically shot. the cinematography is stunning and most of the shots are full of vibrant colours and the dialogue is very snappy and feels very realistic as if they're talking without a script. the pacing of this is very steady, there's not a fast or slow moment it just goes at this normal pace and i thought it was a bit of a relief due to the last movie i watched was very fast at the start and then went slow near the end. the ending of this movie is so happy and tbh i rlly liked it, it felt like a story u would see in a fairytale or smth and i just loved it.
