I’m taken aback by how a mockumentary about zoophilia (particularly around a single fatal incident surrounding horse fucking) felt aesthetically like a sad, gloomy poem above all else. One might describe this as the power of cinema, but it truly challenged my initial thinking. However, at certain points throughout this film’s brief runtime, the narration and staged sequences do run long, bore and confuse.
Humanely depicting a taboo is bound to challenge most viewers. The documentary does not sensationalize lurid details of the incident but presents members (incl. docu subject Kenneth Pinyan) of this taboo community as they are; without offering any explicit support or condemnation to their actions. Therefore, raising a fairly rationale point — why show empathy to animal rapist?
I believe the purpose of this documentary was to merely demonstrate the existence of this group; whose presence seem far removed from society to the point where recourse in managing the aftermath of their zoophilic tendencies are lacking (non-existant beastiality laws, castrating the horse instead).
