imagine you're an ordinary man living a mudane boring life then unexpectedly meet a two men handing you a map to unknown place within the city which later offers you "worldy pleasures" that change your life, eternally. That is the movie all about and it's no wonder considering the film itself is an adaption of the legendary tale of Doctor Faustus.*

Next, the adaption is mainly using the theatrical version of Faust by Goethe also Malowe that give you blending of romanticism and traditional folk story. However, what elevates this masterpiece is not the blend between the two, but the reinterpretation by Jan Švankmajer.

the reintepretation dominantly using surreal and absurd/obscure elements throughout the movie. The use of marionettes as a storytelling very iconic to me and it blends very well with the surreal concept while keeping the original identity of Faust still alive.

What makes this movie obscure/absurd to me is the manipulation of its reality which fuse puppetry world and human world. The climax is at the end quarter of movie, you would see it that our main character being deceived by devil marionettes.

The characters in this movie also feel stiff emotionally—especially the marionettes— making the nihilistic aspect strong. Nevertheless, the Jester can still manage to make you laugh.

Last, you will see many foreshadowing in this movie, realizing the never ending cycle. That's it.
