Michael Fassbenders The Killer is a 21st century assassin; thoughtful about what they eat, physically fit, listens to the smiths, etc. while this guy is the 20th century assassin; gets to the job ten days early it spends 7 days getting drunk, hanging out at the beach, not working very hard at all until the very last minute. But they’re essentially the same guy. And that’s why this movie is so awesome. 

Countless movies owe so much to this one.

Detached everyman Claude decides to become a professional hitman under the guise of financial stability for his family, but these goals seem to take a back seat to his new lavish lifestyle and the thrill of the kill. All is well for this gun for hire when he is assigned to assassinate Billie Williams. No skin off his nose, until he realizes that the target is a woman.

This B-movie feels larger than life with a shoestring budget, largely due to the neorealist cinematography and quick-witted dialogue that pair to succinctly pace this story in its first half. You can easily identify the ways in which Scorsese was heavily influenced when you look at many of his early works, such as the criminal camaraderie in Mean Streets* and the sociopathic isolation of Taxi Driver*.

This honestly feels like a perfect crime noir in its setup, though unfortunately reveals a lackluster finish that doesn't diminish the rest of the movie but does leave you wanting more because of how good it is from the jump. I'm usually the last person to call for a remake, but I think a mostly faithful adaptation with a reworked ending and a master director at the helm could be fantastic.
