Definitely a product of its times, but also gets major props for exceeding the expectations set by the limitations of such times. Super impressed by the set pieces, large crowd scenes, etc.
One of the flatter telling of the Hunchback of Notre Dame, but my God did Lon Chaney really elevate the entire film with his performance. Whether it be his incredible make-up and prosthetics, his ability to convey so much emotion without words, his bouncing off the scenery and playing off it like it’s his own personal jungle gym stunts and all, dude was an absolute juggernaut. Even with some of the most subtle creative choices, like the way the Hunchback’s tongue never sat comfortably in his mouth, Chaney really fully became the character, solidifying his place as one of the greats.

The effects were very well done and I think Patsy Ruth Miller's performance stood out in particular. The soundtrack was beautiful.

This reminded me a lot of The Man Who Laughs. This is just worse.
