Moves with an energy and pace incongruous to the genre. O Toole is, as always, utterly magnetic, although this time much gruffer in his lyrical delivery and poetic postures. But, Katherine Hepburn, Jesus Christ, what a performance. This thing is gorgeous, it’s stunning power plays backdropped against equally stunning shots, and proves that sunlight reflected off water on restored film is a sight blessed enough to keep in your wallet on a battlefield. It’s basically everything I wanted from A Man For All Seasons. The script is immense. The biggest takeaway is that there seems to be no greater treat than watching Hepburn and O’Toole thunder away at one another. Mesmeric. There’s a few sub-par performances but when the par is those two it’s no wonder.
Lots of thoughts and not much sense but this is superb. A rewatch can’t come soon enough. I need a minute.
