The 4th movie I watched in my film noir class. When I began watching, I thought this was going to be the worst movie yet, then it turned around quickly. I mentioned yesterday in my Pulp Fiction review that I have been waiting for a movie to really impress me for a while now. Well, I spoke too soon because this one did. From the plot, to the little small details, the themes, the characters, how organized it was, and then the full circle with the beginning and the end and the downfall of Stan, this is just a great all-around movie and one of the best watches I have had in a long time, and the single best since August and the next before that was last February. Thank you to my teacher and this class because I do not know if I would have watched this otherwise.

I'm coming at this from the context of having watched the Del Toro remake and actually really liking it, so that's bound to be on my mind while watching the original. I certainly enjoyed this, mainly for how much of a bastard Tyrone Power plays here, but I'll admit to feeling less engaged here despite the shorter running time and comparatively streamlined version of the story. Just feel like I got more depth out of the remake, but I'm curious to revisit both versions to see where they land at a later time.

Love love love this film. I saw The newer version first but this is just as good. I find this tale to be something that can be taken in a lot of different directions. In some ways reminds me of the messaging found in dune to not trust charismatic leaders.
