Detective psychological thriller . Giuseppe Tornatore with his mastermind along with the experience of Roman Polanski as a filmmaker create a perfect portrayal of " the inspector " . Gerard Depardieu's performance is rather questionable but his character well-written.

Only thing I didn’t like about this movie was Polanski and I don’t mean his acting . Other than that it must be one of the most underrated films , it plays with tension and suspense so well , it really plays with your emotions, like you think you finally figured it out and every time something jumps out of the dark and surprises you.

Very moody and atmospheric. I love a good opening scene, this one gets you right off the bat.
