I do really like this film, I do, theres just a few things that I don’t quite like…
As I made it clear in my last review, I really don’t like the way they killed off Kirk, it felt anticlimactic and extremely dissatisfying, as well as being unnecessary. I just really hate how they did it. I mean, it’s not as bad as Luke Skywalker's death, but it wasn’t great.
I also really don’t like how this film ruined the perfect ending of Star Trek VI. Honestly, I think that movies ending is perfect, it felt so right… and then this film came along and ruined it all. It was really cool seeing Kirk and Picard work together again, but was it really worth it? Also, Spock isn’t even in this movie! How can you make a new Star Trek movie with the original cast without Spock?
Other than those complaints, I do actually like this movie. I think William Shatner (and the rest of the cast) is excellent, he does a great job in this film. Kirk and Picard have a great chemistry together and it really makes the movie so much better.
I love the villain of this movie, I think he’s absolutely excellent, he’s one of the most memorable parts of this film. He’s definitely one of my favourite villains of the franchise. He’s not as good as Khan, but he’s up there for sure.
I also really like how this feels like a classic Star Trek adventure, it makes you feel almost nostalgic somehow. It’s extremely entertaining and well-made. I do quite like this film, it just has a few things weighing it down.
While this isn't my favourite Star Trek movie, I do still like it, despite its flaws. It’ll probably be four stars next time I watch it honestly.

They fucking killed Kirk. Fuck this movie. Okay, it’s not bad… its not great either… it’s just good. It doesn’t help that it FUCKING KILLED KIRK, but I digress, other than his death, I enjoyed it, it does have some plot holes however.

I remember watching this one on VHS at least once as a kid when I was eagerly watching Next Generation reruns for the first time on the Sci-Fi Channel. I was actually surprised how much of this I remembered even vaguely; I swore Data hating the drink Guinan gives him was in one of the later films, but maybe I was mixed up by the mixed use of two eras of uniforms in this. I might be blinded by nostalgia on it - a fate worse than death, some would argue - but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it. It felt like a fun adventure, and sometimes that’s all Star Trek needs to be. Really should watch the other films and see if I remember them as fondly or as un-fondly.
