So, here's the deal: this logging is from yet another group watch and the theme was Tubi movie... or rather a movie that's available on Tubi. This Cheech Marin-directed/written/starring comedy sees the mustache-bearing funnyman deported to Mexico despite the fact he's an American-born citizen. (Timely percentage: 500%)
Despite going into this cold, this actually took me by surprise: several jokes landed and the usual worries of stereotypes is quelled when it's done tastefully for the most part. Also, there are some sentimental moments I wasn't expecting - like a beautiful moment where our fearless main character (Marin) graciously gives away a heap load of fruits to a family. Then there's the added bonus of familiar faces like Daniel Stern (pre-Home Alone), Paul Rodriguez, Lupe Ontiveros and two important cameos - Cameo frontman Larry Blackmon and the man himself, Jesucristo! This pulls all the stops, and it made for a fun watch on a day where I needed a lighter-hearted film.
