This is Dune for kids in the 2000s.
I mainly rewatched this because a podcast that I’m listening to reviewed it, and it made me want to revisit this film. I think the last time I watched it was in the mid-2010s(??).
One thing I’ll give the creators credit for is creating a deep lore with this world and actually feeling like they do care about it. But when they show the action sequences, it reminded me of when I played with my own Bionicles and made BS up.
I remember thinking it was so weird that the figures hardly resembled their movie counterparts, but now I realise it was just a case of toy manufacturing back then had a hard time resembling their movie counterparts.
Rewatching this film flooded me with so many memories. Learning about Bionicles from kids at my school, my brothers making fun of me for getting into it just to then buy their own and watch this movie with me, going out at night with my mum to buy a (at the time affordable) set and being so happy that I was able to build it by myself, etc.
I genuinely hope that kids these days are experiencing the same level of joy with whatever thing is popular right now.
