Finally, a classic Godzilla movie I found that wasn't made for Americans. Godzilla vs. Gigan is silly in all the best ways. The human characters, Godzilla and his friends, along with the monster brawl at the end. Godzilla vs. Gigan is just a fun time.
I'll start with the human characters. They are much more entertaining than in the original King Kong vs. Godzilla. Gengo and the crew who work to take down the "people" behind World Children's Land are all likable and funny. Gengo's girlfriend gets the most laughs. Their hijinks to execute their plan—especially at the end—are great. Who knew he could draw a cool manga-style poster in such a short time? Are they anything special when it comes to human characters in kaiju movies? No, but they are a lot of fun.
The villains are mostly a little boring, but their origin makes them interesting. I did not know aliens had a role in classic Godzilla movies, but hey, it works. The funniest scene with them is their transformation. Their plan is pretty interesting too. They also do the most important thing they can: bring the kaiju in for battle.
The costumes of the King of the Monsters may not be consistent, but I have to admit he is cool. An unexpected moment was the speech bubble between Godzilla and Anguirus. That was something weird but delightful, and it's a pity they dropped it after that. Godzilla, Anguirus, Ghidorah, and Gigan look good. I appreciate the miniatures as well. All the monsters were just cool.
Now for the battle. It was great and had everything that can make a kaiju fight awesome. I feel Anguirus was definitely leaning a bit on Godzilla, but why wouldn't he? Godzilla is king for a reason. My favorite part was when they teamed up against Ghidorah. Gigan's saw attacks were cool as well. The final battle makes the movie, and it was a blast to watch.
Godzilla vs. Gigan is just fun. It doesn't have the deep allegory, but it makes up for it with an epic final fight. The human characters are pretty entertaining as well. I can't add much except to say it's a blast, and I had a good time with the kaiju.
