Ley Lines

I thought I’d really resonate with this, what with the theme of Chinese descendants living in another country and experiencing Sinophobia (this part I did relate to)
But the crimes and poverty and hopelessness ( I couldn’t relate to)
The main lead’s obviously non Chinese face also made it hard for me to believe that they’re Chinese lol

This movie has a lot of things happening that spring out of nowhere and it’s cool to watch yeah but sometimes it’s just like huh?
As per miike’s usual tendency, we already know that they’re all doomed anyway, so the ending doesn’t hit as hard as it should. Beautiful shot and music at the end tho.

I like the commentary and characters, and the cinematography is great. Solid end to the trilogy.

35th Miike 

I’m very sad to say that besides a very beautiful final scene and beautiful soundtrack, Ley Lines just didn’t stick with me the way it did for others. I thought it was only alright is what I’m trying to say, I didn’t hate it at all just I didn’t like it as much as everybody else. 

What I do love the most about this movie is the overall theme. A society that doesn’t accept this group of people who are of a mixed race and we watch as these people try to overcome this and escape Japan. It’s a very important and very risky theme that Miike went with because this kind of discrimination really does happen and it’s truly depressing to see. Even with this really good theme, the way this movie is structured just does not work for me at all and I’m sorry. 

It’s not a bad movie by any means whatsoever but I just really think if this was structured better, it would’ve been one of my favorites from Miike. This and Over Your Dead Body are both movies that have great themes and so many great things about them but because of the way they’re structured, I just didn’t like them as much as everybody else did and it makes me very sad that I feel this way about them. Maybe when I rewatch them someday I’ll feel different about them but until then, It’s only an okay movie and I really wished I loved it more. Sorry.
