Saw this coming out of the ABSOLUTELY AMAZING Marilyn Monroe exhibit at the Cinémathèque française (go see it), and holy crap what a film… I had completely forgotten. This stunning and very impressive film tells an actually very good story that’s clouded by the overt racism and colonialism during the whole film (on top of the animalized native Americans played by Italians, they keep saying the country is “alive with Indians” and that the Indians are hunting them “it’s just our home”), not to mention the very prescient rape culture happening during this film (The hero is a nice guy who rapes her “because she loves him, but is being ambiguous” for example). But apart from that, the music (not just the great songs) is really amazing, the shots are phenomenal and super impressive, and dangerous (Marilyn almost drowned and ended with an ankle injury, a cast, and crutches). She’s such a sophisticated actress, it’s great. The kid is amazing as well. There were some shooting problems: Mitchum drank a lot, Marilyn’s injury, and Preminger is a very violent tyrant. But I do like the way the film deals with violence, when there’s the rape scene, they are interrupted by a lion who’s killed by bad guys who are fought by the rapist guy, then she chooses him over them…
