While a tad slow at first, the film really does get going once the fantastical elements start coming into play. This is when the musical moments themselves start to become more commonplace and the film leans into that stageshow feel and aesthetic. The film knows it is aping A Midsummer Nights Dream a tad too closely and just leans into it just so the queer themes can really just be forced out into the forefront, chaotic as it may be. For a relatively low budget coming of age film, this is nice and the music does have a certain hypnotic quality to it.
Personally, I would have set this in a college and made it a bit more salacious
