I can see why this is regarded as an important classic. It's not a story that shouts at you, or really drops hints to the plot. Instead, the suspense slowly builds with hidden layers that are very well-written.
Mark falling in laugh with a dead body, a murder he's supposed to be investigating is incredibly gross & reprehensible though. Ugh.
