I think there's a lot that shouldn't work but really does. Like, I hate that Johnston making Ho smack him in slow motion before returning with a full force slap to the face is funny, but it's fucking funny. I also didn't think I'd end up liking Sammi Cheng as a bumbling moron, but it ended up being very funny.
Towards the end, it suddenly becomes really sentimental for a stretch. One of the late gags is Ho's heart rate rocketing up after she hears Johnston say "I love you" over the phone.
Despite everything, this ends up working really well.
"After I went blind, I kept thinking. Why on earth did God make me blind? Then I understood I became blind to look into old files about which no one cares, to go after those murderers who have evaded capture, and to return justice to the victims."
