Though this is 100% the start of Godzilla becoming a bit of joke and a “hero to mankind” now this is one of the best early movies for the character. For a good long while this movie is more Star Trek, more 60’s science fiction, less monsters beating the shit out of each other and it’s a welcome change. Humans learning about the existence of aliens those aliens looking for help and make peace but having ulterior motives is very Star trekian to me. This is also the only movie to my knowledge where Godzilla leaves earth to fight another monster on a different planet. This is also where the infamous Godzilla victory dance comes from which is definitely a sign of things to come. I’ll also say that once Rodan, Godzilla, and King ghidorah are back on earth the destruction they cause hasn’t been seen in a Godzilla movie to this point yet. The intricate details of the models and how the distraction is filmed are all top notch if you’ve ever wanted to see model buildings get destroyed in amazing detail this is the one for you. Only real criticism is that the plot moves along at a snails pace for the first half hour and some of the characterizations aren’t really concrete. You know that the main character doesn’t like the man his sister is dating but why? Because he’s an inventor? Doesn’t stand up for himself? Is a dweeb? What reason exactly because those things I just mentioned are what I had to pull out myself. Also the American actor just having a girlfriend, doesn’t seem too important but knowing when they started dating could help to flesh out exactly how long the aliens had been here because spoiler his girlfriend is one of the aliens who was sent to spy on him specifically but then she got too attached to him. These are little things that really don’t matter too much but for a science fiction story like this I’m a nerd, a looser, an asshole, and I want all of the nitty gritty details about how these alien civilizations live and communicate. Either way do a Godzilla movie in this era this one also doesn’t disappoint and it’s quite good.
I fear for the next couple because I know what’s coming, I didn’t live 27 years of my life being a Godzilla fan and not know how far this mighty creature fell in the coming movies.
