Einerseits ein riesiges historisches Epos mit gewaltigen Schlachten und einem monumentalen Budget, welches tatsächlich eine hohe historische Authentizität aufweist, andererseits jedoch ein Werk, welches vollkommen leblos daherkommt, das Leben einer der größten Männer der Geschichte darstellen möchte, dabei jedoch nicht wirklich beeindruckt und insbesondere auf emotionaler Ebene fast schon eine Nullnummer ist.
Alexander möchte viel sein, viel erzählen von diesem sagenumwobenen Mann, doch ist sein Mythos, sein legendärer Ruf zu gewaltig, um ihn in diesem einen Film gänzlich darzustellen. Nahezu drei Stunden folgen wir dem Wirken dieses großen Feldherren, von Makedonien, bis nach Indien, doch dabei kommt nichts wirklich zu Geltung. Alexander als Charakter ist mehr als schwammig, sein militärisches Genie ist uns nicht gänzlich offenbart und generell leiden alle Charaktere leider wirklich an Hintergrund, an Sinnhaftigkeit und Bezug zur aktuellen Situation. Das Hauptproblem bei diesem Film ist offensichtlich sein Drehbuch; wer weiß wohl wie viel hier tatsächlich herausgeschnitten wurde, da alles unfassbar zusammenhanglos wirkt. Man hat das Gefühl, dauerhaft hin und her zu springen. So kann man nie wirklich eine Beziehung zu den Charakteren aufbauen, da man das Gefühl hat, man würde doch alle wichtigen, alle entscheidenden und Charakter-verändernden Szenen verpassen.

***On the one hand, this is a huge historical epic featuring massive battles and a massive budget, which actually does have a high degree of historical authenticity; on the other hand, however, it is a work that appears completely lifeless, one that aims to portray the life of one of history’s greatest men but fails to truly impress and, especially on an emotional level, falls almost entirely flat.
Alexander aims to be many things, to tell us much about this legendary man, yet his myth, his legendary reputation, is too vast to be fully captured in this single film. For nearly three hours, we follow the achievements of this great general, from Macedonia to India, yet nothing really makes an impression. Alexander as a character is more than vague; his military genius is not fully revealed to us, and in general, all the characters unfortunately suffer from a lack of background, meaning, and connection to the current situation. The main problem with this film is obviously its screenplay; who knows how much was actually cut out here, since everything seems incredibly disconnected. You get the feeling of constantly jumping back and forth. This makes it impossible to truly connect with the characters, as you feel like you’re missing all the important, decisive, and character-defining scenes.
