This medieval themed movie is better than any of the LotR movies if you ask me. Please hear me out in this review on why this movie is so great.
"You think the people of this country exist to provide you with position. I think your position exists to provide those people with freedom."
As this quote suggests, this movie is about leadership and who does and does not deserve it. The story follows William Wallace, who leads the opressed Scots in a rebellion against the English.
Braveheart has everything you can ask for in a movie. I will remember it most for the epic battles, especially the shots of the approaching cavalry in the "hold" scene sent shivers down my back. But most important of all, were the emotional moments which the movie had plenty of. This was fascilitated by multiple factors: an amazing performances by the actors; a very moving soundtrack; and the 3 hour runtime, which Gibson used effectively to build all of the characters and let the viewer empathize with them. Even though the movie is not a comedy, it was also very, very funny at times. The jokes were a welcome addition: they made it possible for the movie to show the horrors of the battlefield and the emotional consequences of war without becoming too emotionally draining.
The storytelling was fantastic, not only because it introduced and developed every character very well, but also because not once during the 3 hours did the movie feel boring. There were multiple moments that managed to catch me off-guard, which I did not expect because the premise of the movie seemed somewhat predictable to me.
After finishing it I could not think of a single negative thing to say about the movie, except from the fact that I think no movie should have a runtime of much more than 2.5 hours. When looking online however, I found that it is apparently notoriously bad when it comes to historical accuracy. While most of the historical inaccuracies people highlighted are mere details in my opinion, there were also some that felt more significant: the whole concept of 'prima nocte' was apparently never a thing in reality for example. These inaccuracies are particularly remarkable because the movie starts off with the quote:
"Historians from England will say I am a liar, but history is written by those who have hanged heroes."
However pretentious this is, these historical inaccuracies do not change anything about the amazing experience I had while watching this movie.
I highly recommend watching it to anyone
