many of his Ferrara earlier works can at times be considered style over substance, however at this point his style has been muted and polished so much idk if can make that claim anymore. Compare this movie about a gross man using his position of power to take advantage of people, to another movie by Ferrara like Bad lieutenant. Both are character studies about gross MEN however this one feels so much more serious and muted in terms of grit. It works for him here in my opinion, but I don't know if it will continue to.
It's not like his style is gone, I mean there's certainly still Ferrara Trademarks to be found, however he has moved quite far from where he started. The coldness and dark and gritty style has become more muted in favor of a simpler approach feeling way more serious and grounded. Idk if I like it more or less

Movies like this make me wonder again why we use "smn has big balls" to say that someone is courageous and strong and "pussy" to call someone a coward. Look where being a slave to your fragile balls gets you.
