This film feels like a complete love letter to music, to self expression and especially to that era of walking around with an MP3 player and headphones on, completely lost in your own world. Honestly, that might be my favorite era ever, and this movie made me wish I had been born just a little earlier to experience it even more.
Technically, I absolutely loved it. There’s something really special about how simple the movie feels. The cinematography is not trying to be flashy, but the framing is beautiful, New York is the perfect city for this kind of story, and the soundtrack is genuinely incredible. But what really makes it work is the natural feeling the movie has. Everything feels honest and focused on simply telling its story and letting the emotions speak for themselves. I don’t even fully know how to explain it, it just has this warmth and authenticity that completely pulled me in.
Keira Knightley is amazing here. Not only because she actually sings herself, which already gives the musical side so much more authenticity, but because she perfectly captures that pure love for music that isn’t about fame or making hits, but about creating something personal that truly means something to you emotionally.
Mark Ruffalo complements her perfectly. He gives such a great performance as this chaotic mess of a man who somehow becomes a complete genius whenever he finally focuses himself. The energy he brings to the movie is fantastic and his chemistry with Keira carries so much of the emotional core of the story.
The rest of the cast is really strong too. Hailee Steinfeld is great, and honestly, the first thing that surprised me was suddenly seeing James Corden appear. Adam Levine also does a much better job than I expected.
This movie was honestly such a special experience. The emotions it made me feel, seeing my favorite city in the world mixed with music everywhere, it felt magical. And honestly, it also gave me one of the best date ideas imaginable. Sharing headphones, listening to music and just walking around New York together sounds like an absolutely perfect plan.
I also love the ideas the movie explores about music itself. How music is never just sound. It’s feelings, memories, moments, people and emotions attached to specific parts of your life. And as someone who basically does everything while listening to music, this movie hit me in a very personal way.
