When I first saw this movie back around 2014, I thought it was a really fun concept and it made me feel pretty smart for “getting it.” Watching it again a decade later, though, I’ve realized I was kind of an idiot.
I still genuinely like the core idea of the film. The visuals are solid, and for the most part the writing isn’t bad. The cast is stacked too, even if some of the performances feel a bit flat. What completely ruined it for me this time around, and why it’s now on my “never watch again” list, is the ending.
When I first watched it, I don’t think I fully understood the relationship between Petra and Mr. Zimit. Rewatching it and actually paying attention, it becomes clear that they had some kind of physical relationship. That makes the whole thing feel really uncomfortable.
First, you’ve got a teacher and a high school student in an implied sexual relationship, which is already messed up. On top of that, the teacher’s fantasy about wanting to sleep with all the students in the thought experiment is pretty disturbing too. But what really bothered me is Petra’s character arc. She starts out as someone who stands up for what she believes in and seems like a genuinely good person. Then, by the end, she confesses cheating with her teacher to the audience. That twist completely soured the movie for me. Instead of feeling clever or interesting, it just left me feeling gross about the whole thing, and honestly, it made me hate the movie
No Spoiler mark because no one should watch this movie
