This was just meant to be a commemorative watch for the EDSA Revolution Anniversary.

But Brocka's political Filipino worker tragedy packs a punch. The way it explores the age-old question of "bayan o sarili?," resonates still and, in many ways, still as thought-provoking then as it is now.

Not to mention the cohesive direction, soundtrack, and solid performances that wrap it all up nicely.

Plus, some awesome shots in the final 10 minutes and impactful goosebumps-inducing end scene.

(Brocka really knows how to use fourth-wall breaks.)

Brocka’s films are so important in preserving Philippine history. I’m convinced this has one of the greatest closing images of all time. Gut wrenching.

anyway. medyo ganito rin sinabi ko sa Insiang last time, pero! pansin ko, galing pala ni Brocka sa pagbalanse ng simbolismo/mensahe, saka ng mismong daloy ng kuwento niya no? there are stories that focus too much on the message they want to convey, that its other aspects— worldbuilding, characters, etc— end up falling flat. but so far, not the Brocka films i've seen. not Bayan Ko, which can stand both as a multilayered critique of the system and the era it was set on, and a glimpse in the life of a man who ultimately just wanted to provide for his family. galing! gusto ko ring matutong magkuwento nang ganito :DD
