rose mcgowan starring in a splatter zombie movie which takes massive inspiration from grindhouse material from the 70s/80s - my idea of a perfect watch.
i was really interested in the grindhouse double feature, but i kinda wanted to watch both films separately so yeah - the main reason i started with this one is i was kinda digging the more splatter style rather than slasher at the minute, also rose mcgowan is the protagonist so that’s also a bonus. i ding really know the director very well, besides the fact he directed ‘dusk till dawn’ (one of my favourite horror films of all time) so it was kinda a given i’d enjoy this, and while i probably didn’t love it as much it’s still undeniably a really fun body horror/splatter with the same over the top gore, except this time there’s no vampires, instead there’s zombies and girl with a machine gun as a leg. it uses splatter and comedy to really give homage to classic zombie films witn absurd tones and over the top gore (evil dead being one that comes to my head) and it does a good job at replicating the lower budget, more gritty style of those films. the way this film is shot is also another thing i was a fan of, it’s really scratchy looking with missing reels, which obviously references the lower quality of exploitative cinema shown in grindhouses, completely lacking any polish but that to me is apart of its charm. it also just does what it is supposed to do - nothing more, nothing less. it’s simply a fast paced action movie with ridiculous, cartoonish amount of gore, explosions, melting testicles and amputated legs. this movie was totally for me, yeah it lacks dialogue or like any development, but when you have action sequences this good who actually cares? rose mcgowan the queen you are.
