Cage is joined by Vanessa Hudgens and John Cusack is this true life tale of Serial Un-aliver Robert Jansen (Cusack) stalkingthe Alaskan red lights district in search of victims, once of which included Cindy Paulsen (Hudgens), who made her escape only to be met with an indifferent response from police. That is until determined State Halcombe (Cage) takes the case.
This was an early dramatic role for Hudgens, fresh off Disney stardom, and she is quite impressive, painting a sympathetic picture of a troubled teen fighting for survival in a (literally) cold world that does not care. Cage is much the straight man here, but his quiet determinism and dogged persistence are inspired. Cusack is suitably creepy as a maddening pillar of Society whose flaws are ignored at deadly cost.
Writer/Director Scott Walker does a good job in balancing the overlapping trajectories of our three leads and while not top tier, this is a solid true life crime story. Bring your winter jacket.
