However, as they delve deeper into their respective performances, the line between fantasy and reality becomes obscured until the murderous, vengeful themes of the play bleed into their own relationship.

26th Miike Movie!
Post-2007 Miike movies usually start off very very fast and have good pacing but then the final hour feels very slow and just drags on until it hits a 2 hour mark but this movie is like the polar opposite. This movie is ridiculously slow for the first hour then tries to speed up towards the final 30 minutes but it just didn’t really work for me i’m sorry. Good themes in the story and some fantastic set pieces and everything but Im really just not a big fan of how this is structured. Maybe my hopes were just high idk 🤷♂️ I’m just gonna say that this is not a bad movie at all but it’s just really really not for me and i’m sorry about that but I just can’t get behind the way this is structured.

a super interesting Miike film, with a slow buildup to some brutal insanity towards the end. i loved a lot of this, especially the gorgeous cinematography and set designs! though, the lighting is often way too dark. nonetheless, i do like Miike’s slower paced films and this one is very effective, but it has a few flaws holding back from his best work. namely the lighting and rather dull characters, also the story being quite hard to follow at times (perhaps a rewatch is needed). overall, a great atmospheric piece with some amazing scenes and a more melancholic approach by Miike. recommended!
