There isn't really a movie like Aguirre: The Wrath of God; it's a one in a lifetime experience.
Herzog set out to film a tale of madness with a small team, a script, and no plan. The audience is eventually left with little to focus on other than the well-written dialogues and the well thought-out plot because of the strangely eerie mood created by the absence of a score.
Since he shot the most of it in the heat of the moment, there are parts in the movie where it's quite obvious that the actors weren't really actors but rather actual people reacting to the really difficult circumstances they were in.

This film could only have been made by a total psychopath. It's amazing!!
