“bless us, lord. for these thy gifts for we are about to receive. and yeah, though i walk through the valley of the shadow of no food, i will fear no hunger. we want you to give us this day, our daily bread. and to the republic for which i stands, and by the power vested in me, i pronounce us ready to eat. amen”
this is definitely a film out of my comfort zone, but i loved it so much. it’s just so fun, and heartwarming at the same time. a woman apart of a three member band who’s addicted to glamour and has a psychotic boyfriend who tries to kill her, she moves to a traditional convent and she teaches them all how to sing, to the point where the whole neighbourhood is attracted to the religious spirit. not only have i never seen something with that exact concept, but i love how it portrays that with friendship, character growth and just pure joy. the music is incredible, it’s gospel and yet it exudes so much energy and passion : i’m not a fan of musicals in the slighest, but the music here is incredibly catchy and memorable, and the performances are immaculate. the lead whoopie goldberg is absolutely fantastic in this film, her comedic timing is excellent and i don’t think anyone else could’ve done it as good as her, she plays dolores with so much magnetism that it makes the character so much more enjoyable, moving onto characters because they’re easily the highlight of this. not only is dolores an extremely excellent protagonist, but the other characters are amazing as well: featuring so many talents within the cast. maggie smith as the strict mother superior who’s goes through so much development, the cheerful mary patrick who always brought a smile to my face and countiess other amazing personalities within. this movie is a little formulaic, and there’s nothing particularly wrong with that but the predictability was the only downside : i like to have fun and this film brought a smile to my face multiple times.. so this is one of my favourite musicals of all time.
