This might be the craziest movie from George Miller's filmography, not because it is wacky, but because it's so normal. This is a classic drama film about a subject I never knew of. Susan Sarandon gave a wonderfully tragic performance, although I haven't seen too many movies with her, I feel comfortable saying it's among her best. This movie is moving in its subject and bravery. George Miller, known for having quite the eclectic filmography even early on, he chose to do what can be described as Oscar-bait, but he did it so masterfully, even if the science community feel it falsified the actual effectiveness of the oil.
Nick Nolte was also very good, but that accent felt a bit silly at times. Apparently Utsinov's portrayal of Nikolais was bad? Eh, the character was still good.
