I definitely think this is one of the more underrated Jackie Chan films. When someone talks Jackie Chan, they never talk about this one. The film isn’t action packed and it feels more out of his comfort zone but you could see the passion he put behind this movie.
I liked the approach they decided to go for in this film, it was dark and gritty and they never left room for breath. Although this film has a nearly 2 hrs long runtime, the pacing is great and never drags in my opinion. The writing for this film isn’t bad even though toward the final act things start getting messy. There’s some cheesy things written sometimes like Jie looking like the joker and arguments between the Yakuza (mainly the acting on those scenes).
The dramatic aspect of this film definitely hits pretty well just some writing issues along the way. It’s great to see how these characters try to adapt to a new society, basically shows how desperate we could get and how power blinds those around us and we don’t even know it. Jackie Chan acting like he doesn’t know how to fight somehow works.
