"nobody asked you if you wanted brought into the world, you just ended up getting here. so the question is, now that you're here, who's asking you to stay?"
one of the more niche ‘erotic thrillers’ of its era, and probably one of the better ones. it definitely gets mislabelled, sure it ventures into softcore porn category, but it has some heart that most erotic thrillers just lack, and ends up feeling a lot more like a generally heartfelt drama that was categorised and marketed as otherwise. its main ideas or purpose, isn’t simple sex, but also is a really effective exploration in deep-rooted trauma, and the bizarre, even somewhat ritualistic ways certain people handle tragedies within their lives (such as the main father who after losing his daughter, goes through a complete spiral of mentality, and copes through visiting his local strip club). it uses its really fragmented, highly odd narrative style to really allows it’s main plot to truly work, as it uses variety different interconnected characters, and goes through the perspective of each of them. it’s almost like a dreamy puzzle piece, as all these characters are key and take their own little part in the overall arc. it’s non-linear plot allows it to become more interesting, and also creates for empathy, especially for the leading protagonist francine. supporting its narrative, the actual visual style is also highly surreal, this entire movie is shot like a dream. it’s neon-drenched, azure strip club setting that creates such a hypnotic, lush atmosphere, and was definitely one of this movies biggest advantages. it’s a really enchanting mystery, with an incredible, unpredictable plot twist, also with a really synthy, interesting score that fits well with it’s atmosphere. super underrated, and is just visually gorgeous, plus the actual plot is also really rootable, and kind spirited
