I am so conflicted putting this movie down as a movie from Côte d’Ivoire for MAW2026 because it seems to be made by a French production company but it has one Ivorian director who also wrote the original comics, an African cast and it obviously depicts life in Côte d’Ivoire. This doesn’t matter in the slightest but I’m still gonna obsess over it. Anyway —
Lovely animation, a great portrayal of 1970s Abidjan, really solid voice acting and a banging soundtrack, but it just kinda randomly ends. It’s clear that they didn’t do an adaptation of all of the graphic novels because it would be too long. I am glad that it dispels negative portrayals of Africa, but that being said, all of the men here are TRIFLIN’.
Aya seems to be the most put together but also the least focused on character in the entire narrative; everything is really happening through her eyes. I hope she managed to become a doctor though!
