What a great slasher. It is definitely Argento coded and has a lot of the things you’d expect from an Italian horror film. It also has a lot of your typical horror tropes, while also including giallo ones. The whole movie is a sort of meta ordeal that is simultaneously ironic, funny, scary, goretastic, and serious. I love the killer in this a great deal, his mask is easily one of the best I have ever seen in a slasher film. There’s something very eerie about the owl mask and I really like how we don’t really know anything about the killer. We don’t see his face, we don’t know why he’s killing, HE IS JUST A MANIAC!!! The kills in this are pretty cool and very gory too. You got mutilated bodies, decapitated heads, chainsaws, axes, fire, and much much more!! The 80s synth music is very good and I just love the whole vibe of the movie oh so much. The cinematography is superb and includes some very gnarly angles, lighting, and shots. The acting can sometimes be bad, but I feel like every character was very genuine. They all reacted quite realistically to the situations at hand. Each character also seemed to have their own unique traits, such as Peter who was selfish or Ferrari who was greedy. By the way, the opening scene is SO GOOD!!! I don’t care if it’s straight up camp, it’s amazing and I love seeing that masked owl dance!! There’s tons of foreshadowing, tons of silly moments, tons of sick kills, and an ending that left me in awe. This is a slasher film done right and is one of the best around!! Also, HUGE shoutout to the mischievous cat LUCIFER who was definitely helping the killer out.

hooptober 11 #23some annoying horror movie stuff as usual but this concept is FANTASTIC and really fun. owl killer my beloved. michael meyers walked off six gunshot wounds and a fall out of a window and a stab in the eye but this guy barely lives through being shot in the frontal lobe... weak 🙄

italian horror completionist behavior continues and this one genuinely delivers. soavi's debut is basically a proof of concept that you can make a stylish, well-crafted slasher on a limited budget if you actually care about the visual language — which he clearly does, having spent time as argento's assistant director. the theatrical setting is such a good choice, it gives the whole film this heightened artificial quality that works perfectly for the genre. it's not reinventing anything but it's executing the formula with a lot more craft than most. worth it for the aesthetic alone.
